An Honest darktable vs Lightroom Comparison

darktable versus Lightroom is one of the most common questions photographers ask when considering a switch away from Adobe's subscription model. Here is a direct comparison across the factors that matter most for day-to-day use.

Price

Lightroom: subscription only (check adobe.com for the current rate)
darktable: Free and open-source

Over a decade, the cost difference is over $1,000. For professional photographers running photography as a business, software costs are tax-deductible — but for hobbyists and semi-professionals, the subscription is a real barrier.

RAW Processing Quality

Both tools produce excellent results. darktable's scene-referred workflow, introduced and refined over recent versions, handles high dynamic range images extremely well. Its colour science is not identical to Lightroom's — the default output looks different — but it is not inferior. Many landscape photographers prefer darktable's output for its handling of gradients and extended tonal range.

darktable supports all major RAW formats including CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF, ORF, RW2, DNG, and PEF — the same formats imagic reads for culling and editing.

Learning Curve

This is darktable's biggest disadvantage. Lightroom's slider-based quick develop panel is intuitive from day one. darktable's module-based pipeline requires understanding the processing order, knowing which modules interact with which, and learning an entirely different mental model for image processing.

Expect two to four weeks of deliberate practice before darktable feels comfortable. After that, many photographers find it more powerful and more flexible than Lightroom.

Cataloguing and Organisation

Lightroom's catalogue system is mature and well-designed for large libraries with collections, smart collections, and keyword tagging. darktable's library module is functional but less polished. For photographers managing tens of thousands of images, Lightroom's catalogue is genuinely superior.

Culling

darktable has no AI culling: it relies on manual flagging and rating. Lightroom Classic added Assisted Culling (eye-focus and open-eyes scores) and automatic duplicate detection in June 2026, but it still has no overall quality score for every frame. For photographers who cull large volumes of images, a dedicated culling tool like imagic scores every frame for sharpness, exposure and composition and groups bursts, which is a significant workflow improvement. Cull in imagic and edit there too (exposure, white balance, curves, HSL, crop, local masks, batch export), or import only your selects into darktable or Lightroom for editing.

Platform Support

Lightroom runs on Windows and macOS. darktable runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. For Linux photographers, darktable is the clear choice.
