Looking for a Narrative Select alternative usually means one of two things: a price just moved, or a feature gap finally got in the way of a deadline. This page does not pretend Narrative Select is bad software - the point is to say plainly what people genuinely like about it, where independent reviews say it falls short, what it actually costs today, and who should switch versus who should stay. For the full feature-by-feature table, see imagic vs Narrative Select.
What people like about Narrative Select
- Fstoppers' review calls it one of the fastest culling tools available - clicking from image to image with no render or switch delay. (Fstoppers: Narrative Select review)
- SLR Lounge and Shotkit both note strong focus and blink detection that groups near-duplicate shots quickly, ahead of a separate editing pass. (SLR Lounge: Narrative Select review)
- Standard and above now include AI-preset editing, not just culling, which several reviewers see as good value for photographers already paying for the AI culling layer. (Kepla: Narrative Select review)
Where Narrative Select falls short
Sourced to public reviews, vendor announcements and trade press, not anecdotes:
- Kepla's review is explicit that the Scenes View and Close-Ups panel - two of the features most praised in other reviews - are not included on the cheapest Lite plan, so the headline price understates what most reviewers actually used. (Kepla: Narrative Select review)
- The same review notes AI processing is demanding even on powerful computers, and that results still need a human check for creative or difficult-lighting images. (Kepla: Narrative Select review)
- Direct hand-off to Photoshop or Capture One is Mac-only, and no lifetime licence is offered - every tier is a subscription indefinitely. (Kepla: Narrative Select review)

Stay with Narrative Select if…
- Fast focus and blink detection for narrowing huge shoots is your main need and you already like handing off to Lightroom or Capture One.
- You specifically want the Scenes View and Close-Ups panel and are fine paying for Standard or above to get them.
Switch to imagic if…
- You would rather not keep a subscription active just to keep working, or you are on Lite and keep missing the features that are actually reviewed well.
- You want culling and RAW development in one app instead of a culling front-end plus a separate editor.

Frequently asked questions
Does Narrative Select edit RAW files on its own?
From the Standard plan up it adds AI-preset editing, but it still ships selections on to Lightroom, Photoshop or Capture One for the full edit. imagic develops and exports RAW files itself, with no second editor required.
Does imagic split features across tiers the way Narrative Select does?
No. All three imagic tiers (Lite 19, Plus 49, Max 99 EUR) include the same AI culling, duplicate detection and batch editing; Max adds the optional MCP/CLI agent layer on top. Narrative's Scenes View and Close-Ups panel, by contrast, are excluded from its cheapest Lite plan.
Why would someone already on Narrative Select switch?
Mainly the subscription itself, and the fact that - per Kepla's review above - the features most reviewers praise sit above the entry plan. Switching makes more sense for someone who wants those features and RAW editing in one one-time purchase.
