Narrative Select is a good culling app, so people who look for an alternative usually have one specific reason: the monthly bill, the fact that the cheapest plan only has basic AI culling, wanting the editing done in the same app, or wanting a tool that is built for a different kind of shoot. This page lists the realistic alternatives, what each one replaces and what it does not, and what each costs. Every price and feature below was checked on the vendor's own pages on 28 October 2026, in the currency each vendor uses and before any sales tax or VAT.
What you are replacing
It helps to be clear about what Narrative Select does well before swapping it out. According to Narrative's own help article, culling and AI assessments happen on your computer, and images are uploaded only for opt-in features such as training Personal AI Presets. Every plan has unlimited images and projects. On the pricing page, Lite costs $10 a month on yearly billing ($15 month to month) and covers basic AI culling; Standard, at $20 a month yearly ($29 monthly), is the first plan with advanced AI culling. Premium ($40 / $59) and Ultra ($60 / $79) add users and more features. New accounts get a free trial of Ultra with no card; the length is not stated.
So a fair alternative has to match local culling with no image cap, or give you a reason to accept a trade-off. The options below fall into three groups: other AI cullers on a subscription, a fast manual browser, and a one-time-purchase app that culls and edits.
Aftershoot: local AI culling and editing in modules
Aftershoot is the closest like-for-like swap. It runs on your own computer, culls with key face detection and duplicate grouping, and sells editing (a Personal AI Profile trained on your edits, AI crop, straighten and masking) and portrait retouching as separate modules. Select alone is $10 a month on yearly billing ($15 monthly); Select + Edit is $40 ($50); Complete, with retouching, is $45 ($55). There is also an "annually billed monthly" option, a 12-month commitment with a $30 fee if you cancel in the first six months. The trial is 30 days.
Choose it if you want culling and editing from one vendor and a flat price that does not change with volume. See Aftershoot vs Narrative Select for the direct comparison.
FilterPixel: genre-trained culling with a reason per frame
FilterPixel has a basic AI cull plus DeepCull, which is trained per genre and explains why it picked each frame. Your original files stay on your computer, but FilterPixel says the embedded preview of each image is uploaded and DeepCull analyses it in the cloud. On its pricing page Standard is $180 a year, Pro $420 and Studio $780, each billed annually, with 20, 70 or 140 DeepCull shoots a year of up to 5,500 photos each; extra shoots cost $7.99. It offers four free projects with no card.
Choose it if you shoot sports, concerts or conferences and want genre-aware picks, and your yearly job count fits the shoot allowance. Narrative Select vs FilterPixel goes into the detail.
Imagen AI: cloud culling and per-photo editing
Imagen is best known for editing a whole shoot in your style from a profile built on your Lightroom catalogs, and it sells AI culling too. Its culling is cloud-based: a project starts with an upload and does not use your computer's graphics card. For individuals, editing on pay-as-you-go starts at EUR 0.045 per photo with a EUR 7 monthly minimum, culling is an add-on from EUR 11 a month, and Limitless (unlimited editing and culling for a solo photographer) is EUR 109 a month billed annually or EUR 139 monthly. New users get 1,000 free edits with no card.
Choose it if your computer is the bottleneck, you are comfortable with cloud processing, and editing in your Lightroom style matters more than culling.
Photo Mechanic: fast manual culling, no AI
Some photographers leave Narrative because they want to make every pick themselves, faster. Photo Mechanic is the long-standing tool for that: very fast preview browsing, ingest and metadata work, with no AI culling mentioned on its product page. It is one of the few options with a perpetual license: $299 including a year of updates and support, or $14.99 a month / $149 a year on subscription. Photo Mechanic Plus, which adds an image database, is $399 perpetual or $24.99 / $249. A license covers one user on up to two computers, and the 30-day trial needs no payment details.
Choose it if speed of manual review and IPTC metadata are the job, as they often are for press and sports work. Narrative Select vs Photo Mechanic compares the two approaches.
imagic: local AI culling and RAW editing, bought once
If the subscription is the reason you are looking, imagic is a one-time purchase: Lite EUR 19, Plus EUR 49 or Max EUR 99. Even Lite includes the AI culling (sharpness, closed eyes and composition scoring, burst and duplicate grouping), and imagic then develops and exports the RAW files itself with its own editor, so a shoot can go from card to finished JPEGs in one app. Everything runs on your Windows or macOS computer and photos are never uploaded. The free trial is 500 exports with every Max feature and no card; culling and editing during the trial do not count against it.
The trade-offs are real: imagic has no genre-trained culling mode, no multi-user plans and no profile built from your Lightroom catalog, and it is not a full catalog manager. If those matter more than the monthly bill, one of the subscriptions above will suit you better. imagic vs Narrative Select sets the two side by side.

Narrative and Aftershoot prices are per month on yearly billing multiplied by twelve. For more detail on Narrative's own plans, see Narrative Select pricing; if your question is specifically about running it on a PC, Narrative Select alternative for Windows covers that.

How to choose
- Keep Narrative if what you dislike is one feature rather than the model: its local culling and unlimited images are hard to beat on a subscription.
- Want editing from the same vendor, on your own computer: Aftershoot.
- Genre-specific picks with a reason for each: FilterPixel, if previews in the cloud are acceptable.
- Weak computer, heavy editing: Imagen.
- You make every pick yourself: Photo Mechanic.
- No subscription at all, culling and editing in one app: imagic.
Whichever you try, run the trial on a real shoot you have already culled yourself and compare its picks with yours. That is the only test that shows whether a culler matches your taste. More pairings are in our Software Comparisons.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest alternative to Narrative Select?
For AI culling on a subscription, Aftershoot Select costs the same as Narrative Lite at $120 a year on yearly billing, as of October 2026, and both run on your computer. For no recurring cost at all, imagic Lite is a one-time EUR 19 and includes AI culling and RAW editing.
Is there a Narrative Select alternative that does not upload photos?
Yes. Aftershoot says it works locally on your device, and imagic processes everything on your computer with nothing uploaded. FilterPixel keeps your originals local but uploads each image's embedded preview for DeepCull, and Imagen's culling is cloud-based.
Is there a Narrative Select alternative with a one-time license?
imagic is sold once (EUR 19, 49 or 99) with AI culling on every tier. Photo Mechanic also has a perpetual license at $299, including a year of updates, but it has no AI culling.
