Comparison of Narrative Select and FilterPixel by culling, where the AI runs, editing, AI culling entry price and trial.

Narrative Select and FilterPixel both promise the same thing: a shoot of a few thousand frames turned into a short list you can trust, faster than going through it by hand. Both group similar frames, both flag the weak ones, both have added AI editing, and both are subscriptions. Where they part ways is in how they score images, where that scoring runs, and how each prices its AI. Everything below was checked on each vendor's own pages on 26 October 2026, in USD before any sales tax or VAT.

How each one culls

Narrative Select is built around people. It runs focus and eye assessments on every image, shows a Close-ups panel that zooms to each face (or to a key element when there is no face), and groups frames into Scenes ranked by sharpness so the best one comes first. Weak frames can be hidden; Narrative says that means looking at 20 to 30 percent fewer images per shoot. A People filter lets you pull every frame of a named person, which is useful when a client asks for all the photos of particular guests.

FilterPixel splits culling into two levels. Basic Cull handles the technical pass (blur, focus, expressions, composition) and groups similar images. DeepCull is genre-aware, with modes for weddings, sports, concerts, conferences and other high-volume work, and gives each photo a score plus a written reason, looking for things like peak action or keynote moments. Survey Mode shows similar frames side by side, Magic Number suggests how many to keep, and FilterPixel stresses that it never removes an image: you review and decide.

In short, Narrative is strongest when faces and expressions drive the decisions, and FilterPixel's DeepCull is pitched at telling you why a frame matters for a given genre.

Where the AI runs

This is the clearest difference between the two. Narrative's help centre says culling and AI assessments happen on your computer. Images are uploaded only for features that need it: training Personal AI Presets uploads your edited images and edit data, and an optional "Help improve Narrative" setting is off by default.

FilterPixel is hybrid. It says your original files never leave your computer, but DeepCull uploads each image's embedded preview (a small file) and analyses it in the cloud. FilterPixel presents that as a plus, since you need no powerful GPU; it quotes about 24 minutes for 3,000 photos. If your contracts limit any upload of client images, Narrative's local assessments are the safer fit; if an older laptop is your bottleneck, FilterPixel's cloud step may be the point in its favour.

Editing on top of culling

Narrative includes AI-preset editing from its Standard plan up, applied as you ship selects to Lightroom, and its Premium and Ultra plans add presets trained on your own past edits. FilterPixel includes AI editing with built-in profiles on every paid plan, and custom profiles trained on your edited Lightroom catalog from Pro up (two on Pro, five on Studio).

Both hand selects on rather than replacing your editor. Narrative ships to Lightroom Classic and Lightroom, and to Photoshop and Capture One on Mac. FilterPixel exports to Lightroom, Capture One or Photo Mechanic. Both run on Windows and macOS.

Pricing, side by side

Narrative Lite$10 ($15 monthly)$120Fast culling, focus scores
Narrative Standard$20 ($29 monthly)$240AI culling, Scenes, Close-ups, AI presets
Narrative Premium$40 ($59 monthly)$480Personal presets, 2 users

FilterPixel Pro$34.99$42070 shoots, Magic Number, 2 custom profiles
FilterPixel Studio$64.99$780140 shoots, 5 profiles, 5 seats

Narrative also has an Ultra plan at $60 a month yearly ($79 monthly) with up to four users. FilterPixel lists its plans as billed annually and did not show a month-to-month price when checked.

Yearly cost bars on yearly billing: Narrative Lite $120, FilterPixel Standard $180, Narrative Standard $240, FilterPixel Pro $420, Narrative Premium $480.

The like-for-like comparison for an AI culling buyer is Narrative Standard ($240 a year) against FilterPixel Standard ($180 a year). Two details change that picture. Narrative's images are unlimited on every plan, while FilterPixel's DeepCull is counted in shoots (20 a year on Standard, up to 5,500 photos each, extra shoots $7.99). And Narrative's cheapest Lite plan does not include the advanced AI culling, so it is not the fair comparison. Our Narrative Select pricing and FilterPixel pricing pages break each list down further.

Trials

Narrative starts every new account on a free trial of its top Ultra plan with no card; the length is not stated on the pricing page. FilterPixel offers four free projects with unlimited photos, also with no card. Run both on the same real shoot you have already culled yourself and compare their picks with yours.

Which one fits

If the subscription is what puts you off both, imagic is a one-time purchase (EUR 19, 49 or 99) that scores sharpness, closed eyes and composition, groups bursts and duplicates, and then develops and exports the RAW files itself, all on your machine with nothing uploaded. It has no genre-trained mode and no multi-seat plans, so it is a different trade-off; there is a free 500-export trial with no card. Frequently asked questions

Is FilterPixel cheaper than Narrative Select?

For AI culling, yes at list price: FilterPixel Standard is $180 a year against $240 for Narrative Standard on yearly billing, as of October 2026. FilterPixel's DeepCull is limited to 20 shoots a year on Standard, while Narrative does not cap images.

Does Narrative Select or FilterPixel upload my photos?

Narrative says culling and AI assessments run on your computer, with uploads only for opt-in features such as training personal presets. FilterPixel keeps your original files local but uploads each image's embedded preview for DeepCull analysis in the cloud.

Which is better for weddings?

Both target weddings. Narrative's Close-ups panel, eye assessments and People filter are built around faces; FilterPixel has a wedding DeepCull mode that explains each pick. Trying both on one of your own weddings is the only reliable way to choose.
