Steps
1. Update to the latest version
Download the current installer from imagic.ink/desktop. Several decode failures that used to fail silently now either work (Nikon High Efficiency NEFs, since 1.4.2) or show a plain error naming the problem.
2. Check whether it's a RAW format imagic reads
See the supported RAW formats list; a format outside that list cannot be opened for editing at all.
3. Nikon Z8, Z9, Zf, Z6III or Z50II? Check your NEF compression setting
High Efficiency and High Efficiency* NEFs from these cameras are supported since 1.4.2 through the file's own embedded full-size JPEG. On an older version, these specifically showed no error at all.
4. Still silent on the latest version? Send us the file
Email help@imagic.ink with the exact camera model and, if possible, the file itself. A silent failure on current imagic is a bug we want to see.
Frequently asked questions
Is my edit actually being saved if nothing visibly changes?
No. If the editor cannot decode the photo, nothing is applied and nothing is saved against it; what you see in the editor is what will export.
Does this affect culling and scoring too, or only editing?
The same decode step feeds analysis and export as well, so a photo the editor can't open also can't be scored properly. The High Efficiency NEF fallback (since 1.4.2) fixes culling, editing and export together, not just one of them.
I'm on the latest version and it's still silent.
That shouldn't happen any more by design (1.4.2 added an explicit message for every decode failure); treat it as a bug and send it to help@imagic.ink with the file.
