Export

Why did my export create photo_1.jpg?

That numbered file is the Keep both conflict policy working exactly as designed, not a bug. It is the default specifically so a re-export can never silently overwrite a file you meant to keep: an earlier version of imagic did exactly that when two photos in one shoot rendered to the same output name, and one quietly replaced the other while both reported success. Keep both closes that gap by giving the new file its own name instead.

Steps

1. Open Export Options

On 5. Export, the "If a file already exists" dropdown controls this. Keep both (rename new) is selected by default.

2. Switch to Overwrite if you want re-exports to replace the old files

Choose Overwrite in that same dropdown. The next export of the same shoot then replaces files with matching names instead of renaming around them.

3. Or choose Skip to leave existing files completely untouched

Skip leaves any file that already exists exactly as it is and only writes files that do not yet exist. The photo is still marked exported in imagic either way.

Frequently asked questions

What does the numbered name actually mean?

photo_1.jpg, photo_2.jpg and so on are imagic finding the first free number rather than overwriting photo.jpg. It checks numbers in order and uses the first one that is not already taken.

Does Skip lose any photos?

No. Skip just leaves the new render out and keeps whatever file was already there; the photo's status in imagic still shows as exported.

Will this happen every time I export?

Only when the destination already has a file with that exact name, most often from re-exporting the same shoot a second time. A first export into an empty folder never triggers it.
