What is a DNG file?
DNG is the odd one out on this list: not one maker's secret sauce but an openly documented RAW specification Adobe published in 2004. Leica and Ricoh use it as their native format, Pentax offers it in-camera alongside PEF, and most serious drones (DJI) and RAW-capable phones write DNG too.
It is also the universal conversion target: any proprietary RAW can be repackaged as DNG without re-mosaicing the sensor data, which is why archives and long-term workflows gravitate to it.

How to open DNG files free

Is DNG better than my camera's native RAW?
Not better — equivalent data in a more open wrapper. Shoot native RAW where the camera gives no choice; convert to DNG when archival openness or software compatibility matters to you. Leica and Ricoh shooters get the open format straight out of camera.
Do drone and phone DNG files work like camera DNGs?
Yes, structurally. Sensor quality differs enormously, but the files open and process identically, which makes DNG sets from mixed sources (camera + drone) pleasantly uniform to batch-edit.
Should I convert my whole archive to DNG?
Only if you have a concrete reason — very old proprietary formats, or a strict open-format archive policy. Mainstream formats like CR2 and NEF remain universally supported, so conversion is optional housekeeping, not a rescue.
