CR2 Files: How to Open, Cull & Edit Canon RAW

The TIFF-based RAW format of Canon's DSLR era — 5D, 6D, 7D, Rebel and PowerShot lines.

What is a CR2 file?

CR2 was Canon's RAW format for roughly fourteen years of DSLRs, from the EOS-1D Mark II in 2004 through the 5D Mark IV, 6D Mark II, 80D, and the Rebel line. If you shot Canon before mirrorless, your archive is CR2 — and there are hundreds of millions of these files in working photographers' back catalogues.

CR2 is TIFF-based and universally supported: essentially every RAW processor of the last two decades reads it. The real problem with CR2 archives isn't compatibility, it's volume — culling and reprocessing years of 20-30 MB files.

How to open CR2 files free

imagic reads CR2 natively and is built for exactly the archive problem: drop a decade of shoots on it, let the AI score and de-duplicate, and batch-process the keepers through the bundled RawTherapee engine — all locally, which matters when the archive is 500 GB.

Nearly every free tool opens CR2: darktable, RawTherapee, even older Photoshop Elements versions. Canon's Digital Photo Professional remains free.

Converting CR2 files

Converting CR2 to DNG saves modest space and future-proofs the archive, but it isn't urgent — CR2 support is not going anywhere. Batch JPEG export for delivery or sharing is usually the more useful conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Are CR2 files still supported in 2026?

Universally. CR2 is TIFF-based and has been stable since 2004, so every serious RAW processor — free or paid — opens it. Your DSLR archive is safe.

How do I batch-convert CR2 to JPEG for free?

Load the folder into imagic during the free trial, select all keepers, apply one style, and export. The RawTherapee engine renders full-quality JPEGs locally; there is no upload and no per-image work.

CR2 vs CR3 — what changed?

CR3 (2018) moved to a modern container, added the smaller C-RAW option, and is only produced by mirrorless bodies. Image quality potential is equivalent at the same sensor; the difference is file structure and size options.
