What is a CR3 file?
CR3 is the RAW format Canon introduced in 2018 with the EOS M50 and now uses across the entire EOS R mirrorless line. Unlike the TIFF-based CR2 it replaced, CR3 is built on the ISO base media file container (the same family as MP4), which lets Canon pack in richer metadata and a smaller optional C-RAW variant.
The practical consequence for photographers: C-RAW files are roughly 40 percent smaller than full RAW with a barely measurable quality cost, which matters when an EOS R5 burst can fill a card in minutes. Either variant needs software that actually understands CR3 — a surprising amount of older free software does not.
