What is a NEF file?
NEF has been Nikon's RAW format since the D1 in 1999, spanning the entire D-series DSLR era and today's Z-series mirrorless line. It is TIFF-based, well documented, and — unusually among makers — Nikon exposes real quality choices: uncompressed, losslessly compressed, and lossy compressed NEF, at 12-bit or 14-bit.
Recent Z bodies (Z8, Z9) added High Efficiency RAW, a TicoRAW-based option that shrinks files dramatically while staying editable. A 45 MP Z8 lossless NEF runs around 50-55 MB; High Efficiency roughly halves that.

How to open NEF files free
