A dedicated macro lens gets you to 1:1 magnification, meaning a subject the size of your fingernail fills the frame edge to edge. The GR IIIx does not get close to that. At its closest working distance the reproduction ratio is well under half of true macro, somewhere in the neighborhood most people describe as "close focus" rather than macro. That distinction matters because it sets expectations. An ant will render as a dark speck with texture you can guess at but not really resolve. A bumblebee working a lavender head, on the other hand, will fill close to a third of the frame with real detail in the fuzz on its thorax. Know which category your target insect falls into before you get your hopes up.

What the Macro setting actually buys you

Snap focus and full press snap for the ones that won't sit still

The GR IIIx has a small pop-up flash and no hot shoe (the accessory port on top is built for the optical viewfinder, not a strobe). At normal portrait distances that little flash is fine as fill. At 12cm from an insect it is a different story: the guide number is low, there is no diffusion, and the light throw simply is not calibrated for anything that close, so the near side of the subject blows out into a hard, flat hotspot while the far side falls into shadow. I stopped using it for macro entirely. What actually works is shooting in open shade rather than harsh direct sun, where the light is softer and more even, still leaving enough to shoot f/5.6 to f/8 at ISO 800 to 1600.
