The 50-140mm's constant f/2.8 is genuinely nice under the sodium-vapor lights of an evening meet, where the 70-300mm's f/5.6 at the long end forces ISO 6400 and up. But 210mm equivalent is short for a full-size track. I mostly used it for long jump and pole vault, where the action happens close to a fixed runway and you don't need the extra reach. The 70-300mm was my everyday lens for the season. It's light enough to hand-hold for six hours without a monopod, autofocuses fast enough to keep up with sprinters most of the time, and it's the one I'd recommend to someone starting out. Settings that actually mattered, and a few that didn't

Field events reward anticipation over burst rate. A long jumper's takeoff happens in a fixed spot you can pre-focus on; you don't need 20 fps if you know within a few inches where the peak of the jump will land in your frame. If I were buying a camera specifically to shoot track and field every weekend of the season, I'd probably save toward the X-H2S for the faster sensor readout and deeper buffer.
