Aftershoot is the AI culler most photographers try first, so the people searching for an alternative have usually used it and found one specific thing that does not fit: the yearly cost once editing and retouching are added, the 12-month commitment on the monthly-paid plan, the 2,500 edited images it needs before a personal editing profile works, or simply wanting a different kind of tool. This page lists the realistic alternatives, what each one replaces and what it does not, and what each costs. Every price and feature below was checked on the vendor's own pages on 29 October 2026, in the currency each vendor uses and before any sales tax or VAT.
What you are replacing
Be clear about what Aftershoot does well before you leave it. Its technical answers page says it "works locally on your device" on Windows and macOS, with 8 GB of RAM as the minimum. It culls with duplicate grouping and key face detection, and sells editing (marketplace styles, a Personal AI Profile trained on your edits, AI crop, straighten and masking) and portrait retouching as separate modules. Selections and edits go to Lightroom Classic, Lightroom, Capture One, Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw. A Professional AI Profile needs at least 2,500 of your edited images, and Aftershoot recommends 5,000.
On the pricing page, Select (culling) is $10 a month on yearly billing or $15 month to month, Select + Edit is $40 or $50, and Complete, with retouching, is $45 or $55. A third option, "annually billed monthly" (Complete at $50 a month, for example), is a 12-month plan with a $30 fee if you cancel in the first six months. The free trial is 30 days. Our Aftershoot pricing explained covers every plan over five years.
So a fair alternative has to match local AI culling with a flat price, or give you a good reason to accept a trade-off. The options below fall into three groups: other AI cullers on a subscription, a fast manual browser, and a one-time-purchase app that culls and edits.
Narrative Select: local culling with unlimited images
Narrative Select is the closest like-for-like swap. Narrative's help article says culling and AI assessments happen on your computer, and every plan has unlimited images and projects. Lite, at $10 a month on yearly billing ($15 monthly), covers basic AI culling; Standard, at $20 ($29), is the first plan with advanced AI culling and AI editing with Narrative's core presets. Premium ($40 / $59) adds AI presets trained on your own edits and a second user, and Ultra ($60 / $79) allows up to four users. New accounts get a free trial of Ultra with no card; the length is not stated.
Choose it if you want what Aftershoot Select does, on your own computer, at a similar price. Aftershoot vs Narrative Select sets the two side by side.
FilterPixel: genre-trained culling in the cloud
FilterPixel has an unlimited basic AI cull plus DeepCull, which is trained per genre (sports, concert, conference, wedding) and gives a score and a written reason for every frame. Your originals stay on your computer, but FilterPixel says the small preview embedded in each RAW is uploaded and DeepCull analyses it in the cloud, which is why it does not need a powerful machine. On its pricing page Standard is $180 a year, Pro $420 and Studio $780, each billed annually, with 20, 70 or 140 DeepCull shoots a year of up to 5,500 photos each; an extra shoot is $7.99. Every plan now lists Instant Profiles that learn your edit from your own catalogue. It offers four free projects with no card.
Choose it if you shoot events on deadline and want genre-aware picks, and your yearly job count fits the shoot allowance. FilterPixel vs Aftershoot covers the pairing in detail.
Imagen AI: cloud culling and per-photo editing
Imagen is best known for editing a whole shoot in your style from a profile built on your Lightroom catalogs, and it sells AI culling too. Its culling is cloud-based: a project starts with an upload and does not use your computer's graphics card. For individuals, editing on pay-as-you-go starts at EUR 0.045 per photo with a EUR 7 monthly minimum, culling is an add-on from EUR 11 a month, and Limitless (unlimited editing and culling for a solo photographer) is EUR 109 a month billed annually or EUR 139 monthly. New users get 1,000 free edits with no card.
Choose it if your computer is the bottleneck, you are comfortable with cloud processing, and you deliver either modest volumes (pay-as-you-go) or very high ones (Limitless). Aftershoot vs Imagen AI works through the per-photo maths.
Photo Mechanic: fast manual culling, no AI
Some photographers leave Aftershoot because they would rather make every pick themselves, quickly. Photo Mechanic is the long-standing tool for that: very fast preview browsing, ingest and metadata work, with no AI culling on its product page. It is one of the few options with a perpetual license, $299 including a year of updates and support, or $149 a year on subscription (annual subscriptions have no trial). A license covers one user on up to two computers.
Choose it if speed of manual review and IPTC metadata are the job, as they often are for press and sports work. Photo Mechanic alternatives shows where it sits among the AI tools.
imagic: local AI culling and RAW editing, bought once
If the subscription is the reason you are looking, imagic is a one-time purchase: Lite EUR 19, Plus EUR 49 or Max EUR 99, with future updates included for each tier. Even Lite includes AI culling (sharpness, closed eyes and composition scoring, burst and duplicate grouping), the full manual editor and batch export on a native RAW pipeline, so a shoot can go from card to finished JPEGs in one app without Lightroom. Everything runs on your Windows or macOS computer and photos are never uploaded. The free trial is 500 exports with every Max feature and no card; culling and editing during the trial do not count against it.
The trade-offs are real: imagic has no genre-trained culling mode, no multi-user plans and no profile built from your Lightroom catalog, and it does not do batch portrait retouching the way Aftershoot Retouch does. If those matter more than the yearly bill, one of the subscriptions above will suit you better. imagic vs Aftershoot compares the two directly.
The alternatives side by side

Aftershoot and Narrative prices are per month on yearly billing multiplied by twelve. Over three years the gap widens: Aftershoot Select is $360 and Select + Edit $1,440, against a single EUR 19 to 99 for imagic. If you are weighing Narrative instead, our Narrative Select alternatives roundup covers the same field from that side.

How to choose
- Keep Aftershoot if what you dislike is one plan rather than the product: switching from Complete to Select alone, on yearly billing, cuts the bill to $120.
- Same idea, unlimited images, similar price: Narrative Select.
- Event work on deadline with genre-specific picks: FilterPixel, if previews in the cloud are acceptable.
- Weak computer, heavy editing: Imagen.
- You make every pick yourself: Photo Mechanic.
- No subscription at all, culling and editing in one app: imagic.
Whichever you try, run the trial on a real shoot you have already culled yourself and compare its picks with yours. That is the only test that shows whether a culler matches your taste. More pairings are in our Software Comparisons.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest alternative to Aftershoot?
For AI culling on a subscription, Narrative Lite costs the same as Aftershoot Select at $120 a year on yearly billing, as of October 2026, and both run on your computer. For no recurring cost at all, imagic Lite is a one-time EUR 19 and includes AI culling and RAW editing.
Is there a free alternative to Aftershoot?
Not a permanent one with AI culling among the tools above; each has a free trial instead. FilterPixel gives four free projects, Imagen 1,000 free edits, Narrative a trial of its Ultra plan, and imagic 500 free exports with unlimited culling and editing, none of them needing a card.
Is there an Aftershoot alternative with a one-time license?
imagic is sold once (EUR 19, 49 or 99) with AI culling on every tier and updates included. Photo Mechanic also has a perpetual license at $299, including a year of updates, but it has no AI culling.
Can I cancel Aftershoot at any time?
That depends on how you pay. Aftershoot's pricing page says the "annually billed monthly" option is a 12-month plan with a $30 fee if you cancel in the first six months; check the terms of your own plan in your Aftershoot account before you switch.
